Dutton starts off chapter five by speaking with a professor in Montreal. He is considered a "psychopath" and stated that he bought a new sports car out of nowhere, which is something considered to be psychopathic. Anyways, what was discussed was the idea of us as people becoming more psychopathic. The professor speaks on how desensitized kids are now, an example being pornography on the internet.
In the next section of the chapter, it begins by saying the personalities of style have fluctuated over the past few decades. Today, students in college are forty percent lower in empathy than they were twenty or thirty years ago. Narcissism levels have, however, skyrocketed. Dutton then talks about bank robbers being questioned on why they did what they did. Their answers portrayed them as saying the same things as psychopaths do. The biggest reason they robbed was because they thought it would be fun. Is this good that my generation is less empathetic and more narcissistic? Would those qualities help in the business world?
A "warrior gene" controls the enzyme, MAOA, production. If you have lower levels, you are most likely more aggressive in your behavior. Boys who were abused or neglected and have low production of this enzyme, they are more likely to become violent psychopaths. Dutton gave the example of Bradley Waldroup, who has low levels of MAOA production. He shot his wife's friend eight times and split her head open with a machete. He then cut off his wife's finger, slashed her, and beat her with a shovel. Only the wife survived.
Clearly, these characteristics are not ones you want to find in a businessman. If he gets angry very easily and very quickly, he won't make any sales or find any success. I would like to know if being less empathetic and more narcissistic are qualities a businessman needs to be successful,
